Governor activates emergency resources as winter weather moves into New Mexico
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an emergency declaration in response to severe winter weather forecasted to move across New Mexico this weekend, with extreme cold temperatures persisting throughout the week.
The emergency declaration makes $200,000 available to support communities across the state as hazardous travel conditions and freezing temperatures threaten public safety.
The State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is activated to coordinate resources and collaborative -agency response. Agencies supporting the EOC and local emergency managers include New Mexico State Police, Department of Transportation, New Mexico Environment Department, New Mexico Agriculture Department, and the New Mexico National Guard.
Residents are urged to continue to use safe heating practices and keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves. Never use an oven or stove to heat your home. Wrap or drip exposed pipes to prevent freezing, and check on neighbors, family members and anyone who may need assistance. Ensure emergency kit supplies are stocked and easily accessible, including enough food and water to last each member of the household three days.
“This funding gives state agencies the ability to immediately respond and support communities facing dangerous winter conditions,” said Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. “I’m grateful to those working around the clock in extreme weather, and to the New Mexicans who are doing their part to keep themselves, their families and responders safe.”
Executive Order 2026-005 directs the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to allocate $200,000 to the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for emergency use.
