New Mexicans urged to prepare for frigid temperatures, snow, and ice

The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is urging residents to prepare for dangerously cold temperatures and winter conditions expected across much of the state.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque is forecasting several days of extreme cold temperatures, snow, and ice. These extreme winter conditions increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, putting vulnerable populations at higher risk.

The department reminds residents to protect the four Ps: People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants. Use safe heating practices and keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves. Never use an oven or stove to heat your home. Wrap or drip exposed pipes to prevent freezing, and check on neighbors, family members, and anyone who may need assistance. Ensure emergency kit supplies are stocked and easily accessible, including enough food and water to last each member of the household three days.

A list of warming centers can be found on DHSEM’s website or, for the most up-to-date information, residents should reach out to local officials.

If you must travel, plan for icy roads and allow extra time. Keep winter supplies in your vehicle, including warm clothing, blankets, water, and a fully charged phone. Drivers can find the latest road conditions at nmroads.com

The department is activating the State Emergency Operations Center to an enhanced readiness status to better coordinate with the National Weather Service and local officials to support resource requests as they come in.

Stay informed and follow local guidance to keep you and your family safe during the cold weather. Residents are encouraged to turn on emergency alerts on their phones to receive real-time weather updates. More information about preparing for severe winter weather is available at dhsem.nm.gov/severeweather.
