Tornados
Tornadoes can happen at any time and bring powerful winds that may exceed 200 miles per hour. They can damage buildings, overturn vehicles, and create dangerous flying debris.
Before a tornado
- Know your tornado risk. Tornadoes are more common in the Midwest and Southeast but can occur in other parts of the country.
- Learn the warning signs. These include a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud, a cloud of debris, or a loud roar similar to a freight train.
- Monitor weather forecasts and alerts for changing conditions.
- Identify a safe place to shelter and practice getting there quickly. The safest option is a FEMA-rated safe room or an ICC 500 storm shelter. If those are not available, use a small, interior, windowless room or a basement on the lowest level of a sturdy building.
- Prepare an emergency kit and keep it easy to access. Include items such as a flashlight, extra batteries, a weather radio, a phone charger, medications, water, and basic first aid supplies.
during a tornado
- Go to your safe place right away.
- Follow instructions from emergency alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, or local warning systems.
- Protect your head and neck with your arms. Use blankets, mattresses, or sturdy furniture for extra protection if available.
If you are in a vehicle
- There is no completely safe option in a vehicle during a tornado.
- If the tornado is visible, far away, and traffic is light, you may be able to drive away at a right angle to its path.
- If driving is unsafe, pull over out of traffic lanes. Stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on. Lower your head below the windows and cover it with your hands and any available cushion.
- If you can safely reach a spot lower than the roadway, leave the vehicle and lie flat, covering your head and neck.
- Do not shelter under bridges or overpasses.
After a tornado
- Stay away from downed power lines, damaged utilities, and unstable buildings.
- Wear protective clothing during cleanup, including sturdy shoes, long pants, and gloves. Use a face covering if cleaning mold, dust, or debris.
